Kashmir is one of the few Indian destinations where the month changes the trip entirely — not just the weather but which roads exist. Gulmarg in January and Gulmarg in June are two different holidays. Here is what each part of the year is actually like.

If you only want the tulips
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opens for about two to three weeks, usually in the first half of April. The exact dates are announced days in advance, because they depend on the bloom, not on a calendar.
If you want snow
Gulmarg between late December and February is the real thing — one of the highest gondolas in the world, and enough snow to ski on rather than photograph. What you are accepting in exchange:
- Srinagar flights get cancelled in heavy snow, sometimes for a day or two.
- The Gulmarg road can close. So can the gondola, at short notice, on wind.
- Sonamarg is shut. So is the road to Leh.
- Dal Lake partially freezes, which is beautiful and ends shikara rides.
None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason not to book a tight connection on the way home.
What a Kashmir trip costs
For a group departure with the stay, transfers, sightseeing and a trip captain included, the honest range is ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 per person depending on how many nights and how far east you go. Ours:

Three things that are true all year
- A houseboat is worth one night, not four. They are beautiful and they are cold, and the bathroom situation is a genuine consideration in winter.
- Gulmarg gondola tickets are the bottleneck. Phase 1 and Phase 2 sell out. Whether they are in your package is a fair question to ask before booking.
- Sonamarg is closed in winter. Any itinerary in January that lists Sonamarg is either wrong or planning to substitute it without telling you.
